One of Georgia's most identifiable towns in the North Georgia Mountains is Helen, Georgia. For years Helen has been one of the places most visited by residents as well as vacationers. It is easy to see why! Every weekend is packed with ideal summertime fun to this small Alpine village in the mountains.
This weekend Helen had one of their signature events, a balloon fest featuring more than 30 balloons. A short walk south from the center of town would take you to several broad fields filled with the wonders of hot air balloons. People gather early, sitting in the grass to watch the balloon crews unpack and launch these colorful sky craft. As each rose into the air, applause and cheers went out from the crowds as the crafts rose quickly into the gentle air. As many as 8 balloons could be seen as they headed south over the mountains in the distance.
Kids have a keen interest in the large balloons. They stand close to watch them fill with hot air and get excited when they upright themselves, ready for the pilot and riders. The colors are strikingly vivid against the afternoon sky. Local establishments have crowds standing on their decks, relaxing in the warm afternoon sun. It is easy to spend a couple hours watching this spectacular event.
Of course, there are many activities to choose from while you visit. Crowds of kids drifted down the Chattahoochee River that meanders through Helen's downtown area. Parents can relax at local restaurants and taverns, keeping an eye on the kids as they pass to the end point. There they get on buses to go back to the start to do it all over again. Shops and outdoor entertainment welcomes those that choose to take a leisurely stroll through town.
Helen is an ideal destination for those wanting to stay close to home this summer, but want a relaxing day or weekend in the mountains!
