In May of 1864, Union Major General William T. Sherman was prepared to strike and take Atlanta, Georgia from Kennesaw Mountain just north of the city. From the top of the mountain today, you get a great view of Atlanta's downtown area. Even during the Civil War, Atlanta was visible from this vantage point.

Georgia's Travelers Rest State Park

Traveling the North Georgia mountains in 1811 was a trip of several days. A new road named "The Unicoi Turnpike" opened up the Appalachian Mountains to commerce and travelers. Businesses opened up to provide for the needs of the weary rider. Food and lodging improved the trip, and one of those locations was Travelers Rest.
